Welcome to Walker's Black Cauldron Chili
Throughout his life, Michael P. Walker enjoyed tinkering in the kitchen. Whether it was conjuring up homemade barbecue sauce, and/or creating a dish of pizza, Mr. Walker - or as I call him Uncle Mike - always knows how to send his guests home with a full belly.
However, chili is Uncle Mike’s true passion. One day in the 1980s, Uncle Mike entered a quest to create the perfect chili seasoning. His goal was not only excellent taste, but also a spice free of additives and preservatives.
Uncle Mike spent years experimenting in the kitchen, tweaking his chili seasoning to perfection. His professional taste testers were none other than his brothers.
Growing up, I heard many stories of the “Walker Boys” gathering to watch the Green Bay Packers at Uncle Mike’s house. It was during these gatherings that Uncle Mike received his most honest input.
Through trial and error, Uncle Mike finally concocted a chili recipe he could be proud of. However, for reasons that he kept to himself, he decided to keep the formula hidden.
Rather than celebrate his delicious creation with the rest of the world, he chose a low-key approach, opting to share it with family, friends, and fellow chili enthusiasts in the local area.
Then tragedy struck our family.
In the summer of 1986, Uncle Mike’s son, Michael P. Walker Jr. (also known as “Boog") passed away suddenly.
Boog’s passing had a profound impact on the family, one that has never truly dissipated. In Uncle Mike’s words, he needed something therapeutic to help him cope with his grief.
Following the wisdom of his mother, Vivian, Uncle Mike decided to share his chili with the outside word. He launched his business as a tribute to Boog, and called it “Walker's Black Cauldron Chili”.
It has been held in high regard by Northeast Wisconsin residents ever since.
Through the hard work of his brother Paul, Walker’s Black Cauldron Chili was marketed to about 25 stores in the Northeast Wisconsin area. At a time when there was no internet, the glory of Walker’s Chili was spread through word of the mouth.
Age takes its toll on anyone, and Uncle Mike slowed the business down for an extended period. Not knowing what to do with his chili recipe, he waited until he found someone with the same passion for his chili as he has. That person turned out to be his nephew “Oldie”.
Walker's Black Cauldron Chili is a story of a family passionate about chili. We’ve had our highs and lows throughout the last 30 years, but our dedication to each other has never wavered. In many ways, our chili is our family symbol.
We ask that you join us in celebrating this symbol.
